Messengers Incorporated  "Soulful Proclamation" 1970 US ultra rare Psych Soul Funk

Ultra-hip funk from Oklahoma’s Messengers Incorporated – a group who come across with a sound that’s every bit as righteous and heavy as you might guess from the cover! Instrumentation is heavy on bass, guitar, and organ – and topped with some great saxophone work too – all in a sound that’s draws plenty of inspiration from righteous jazz of the early 70s, but which focuses the sound into a more funk-based approach overall. Vocalists shift throughout – and include singers Barbara and Charles Burton, later of Burton Inc – who help give the record as much of a soul-based punch alongside the jazzy instrumentation of the combo! The whole thing’s a real heavy hitter – the kind of album that could have soared large, had it gotten wider release back in the day…~

In the ‘70s radio stations were a powerful force across the whole of the US, and anyone with a transistor radio had access all kinds of music. Live music was another matter altogether, and unless you found yourself in a major city your nights out were limited to what the local talent had to offer. This was especially so with soul and funk acts, as mainstream rock and pop was where the money was. So for small time Oklahoma soul bands such as husband and wife Charles and Barbara Burton’s groups Messengers Inc - and later Burton Inc - times were tough. However, like many purveyors of soul, tough times were no match for those with determination, persistence and a story to tell. Many artists scraped enough money together to make a 45 or two on their own label; but the Burtons took this to another level - they got themselves organised and released their own full length LPs.

With these two albums we tell the story of the Burtons and their contribution to 1970s Midwest funk and soul. Their dreams and desires, struggles and setbacks are all set out in our extensive liner notes, complete with previously unseen photos of the bands. But above all here are two albums chock full of good music - Messengers Inc from 1972 with heavy funk & deep soul, Burton Inc from 1976 with soulful disco and boogie, including the rare title track dancefloor favourite 'LA will Make You Pay’….~

Great LP. Impossible to find the original and it sells for upwards of $1000 if you can. Very well created reissue from Jazzman UK, sounds great on a fairly high end system….~

Features the singers Barbara Burton, Charles Burton, Sonny Morrison, Mauruce Love. With Maurice Howard on drums, James Bucky Young on bass ad Morric McCraven on sax….~

Covers of soul funk succes! Great version…~

Prolific RCA producer, Ethel Gabriel, created The Living Strings series of albums, which, from what I can gather, were easy-listening instrumental string versions of popular tunes. They must have had some success as they spawned other “Living” ventures, such as the Living Jazz one that today’s track is taken from.
Reed man, Phil Bodner, was inspired by Isaac Hayes when he arranged and conducted the album, ‘Hot Butter & Soul’. Released in 1970, it features New York session musicians playing jazzed up interpretations of soul hits. This version of The Jackson Five’s ‘ABC’ certainly doesn’t surpass the original, but if, like me, you have a weak spot for horny instrumental versions of well known songs, this’ll hit it….~

A nice album covering soul / funk masterpieces funky! A drum break in the head and middle Jackson 5 “ABC” and “Games People Play”, I do not know whether the name is too long Isaac Hayes “Hyperbolicsyllabicses quadalymistic” Walk On By “and so on!…~

The Dynamics  "What A Shame" 1973 US Soul Funk
full vk
https://vk.com/wall-59990730_305

A bit sweet soul, a bit funky and a real indie soul classic from the early 70s! The album’s the second from The Dynamics, a group from Detroit, but one who work here with a style that’s much more in the east coast mode of the All Platinum/Stang generation! The production is nice and mellow on the best cuts – fragile, but never sloppy – and the vocals really dominate nicely on the ballads, sliding forward with a really mellow late nite sound! The album does have one stand out funk track, titled “Funkey Key”, but most of the set is relatively mellow and other tracks include “Count Your Chips”, “What A Shame”, and “You’ll Never Find A Man Like Me”….~

Managed by Ted White, Aretha Franklin’s husband (at the time), the Dynamics released a slew of singles and two albums but never achieved any sustained chart action; they’re visually unknown to most, even to those who know their recordings. “What a Shame“, the title track, is arguably their best single, a sweet falsetto sings the woeful tale in a mournful voice usually associated with wakes and funerals. Like everything else on the album, it was written and produced by the now-deceased Ronnie Shannon, an eccentric songwriter from Detroit who gained fame writing hits like “Baby, I Love You” for Aretha. “Woe Is Me” paves the same mournful path, as does “You’ll Never Find a Man Like Me”. Shannon speeds it up on “Shucks I Love You“, a happy-in-love tune carried by an airy falsetto lead. Brass is prominent on “Funky Key“, a groove daddy that probably worked better live; the lead is rough, countering the melodic and smooth backing vocals. The Dynamics had at least three lead singers and used them all. “Count Your Chips” is a slow beauty, typical of sounds emanating from Philly, yet it failed to sell despite a sugary lead vocal. Other notables include “Voyage Thru the Mind” and “Let Me Be Your Friend“ …by Andrew Hamilton…allmusic…~
