Turning Point “Silent Promise” 1978 UK Canterbury Scene, Jazz Fusion
full vk
Some great British Jazz on offer here. I have the original Silent Promise on vinyl but never owned Creatures of the Night so this was a real bonus acquiring both recordings on CD! The recording quality is top notch I’m pleased to say. I personally love Pepi Lemer’s melodic and somewhat haunting vocalisations as she unison’s the melodies with other members of the band. There are some great compositions and playing on both these recordings.
I was lucky enough to see the band live at the Bulls Head in Coventry many years ago with non-less than Allan Holdsworth guesting on guitar. Sat at a table just 10 foot in front of the band … it was a memorable night indeed!
Recommended for anyone with an interest in British contemporary Jazz from the late 70s….by… Ian Leslie…..~
IMHO, ‘Creatures of the night’ is the best album ever in the 'jazz-rock’ idiom, but I’m also minded to say, in the 'ambient’ idiom as well. The record is a mesmerising confection of music that utterly encapsulates a hot summer night, and I cannot think of a better soundtrack to the early hours. Pepe Lemer’s singing is utterly beguiling, the band is superb and the playing exemplary. But it is fair to say that they said all they had to say on one album. 'Silent promise’ is a nice dessert to the main course, but goes nowhere that it’s predecessor hadn’t been in a superior manner….by… andywilliam….~
Turning Point were a late 1970s fusion band from the UK. The band was formed by Jeff Clyne (bass) and Brian Miller (keyboards), who had previously played together in Isotope, and Pepi Lemer (wordless vocals). Also in the band were David Tidball (saxes) and Paul Robinson (drums). They toured the UK, including supporting National Health in 1977. Their final tour in 1980 included Allan Holdsworth and Neil Ardley…..~
