Originally recorded for the EMI Nigeria label and produced by legendary producer Odion Iruoje ‘Keyboard’ was a one-off studio project formed by Brodricks Majuwa and Isaac Digha from circa 1978. These two session men were often used at the EMI studio and played in multiple recordings that Iruoje produced throughout the era
This extremely scarce and obscure record features amongst others Ignace de Souza of the Black Santiagos from the city of Cotonou, Benin and Jonni Wood from the band SJOB movement.
Lilting, laid-back, solid, soul-funk grooves and beautiful horn arrangements with synth effects combine for a unique sound but one that is unmistakably from the sound forge of Odion Iruoje and his two front-line studio engineers Emmanuel Odenusi and Kayode Salami. The album is licensed directly from Broderick Majuwa (hailing originally from the Delta region of central southern Nigeria) who played with many bands in the 1970s: starting out with The Severe 7 (a Santana-influenced rock band from Benin City) followed by The Thermometers with Emma Dorgu who cut one 45 for Afrodisia records. Later on he had stints with more famous Nigerian artists Ebenezer Obey and Bongos Ikwue amongst others. The LP is released again after 35 years and strictly limited to only 1000 vinyl copies….~

Tala AM (or Tala Andre Marie to give him his full and proper name) was born in Bandjoun in Cameroun in 1950. Talas life initially wasn’t easy, he becomes blind at an early age and has lost both his mother and father by the age of 12. He then went on to make his first guitar by hand and form his first band “The Rock Boys” by the age of 17. Shortly after he meets the powerhouse of Camerounian music at the time Manu Dibango, a pivotal moment. With help, he re-locates to Paris and signs a contract with Fiesta Records. The first fruit of those labours is his debut album “Hot Koki”.

The lead track (and highlight of this compilation) is “Hot Koki” it is a powerhouse of funk guitar, soul and infectious afro rhythms. Fast forward to 1974 and the famous “Rumble In The Jungle” fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. The story goes a little something like this… At an accompanying musical event we find James Brown and Tala AM. JB Hears Hot Koki and creates a remarkably similar sounding track “The Hustle” (check it out side by side if you have the time). Tala sued.. and won.

Fast forward another 40 years. Time to take a look back on the funkier moments of Tala. This is not a “best of” Tala, that has already been done. Want to get into Tala’s famous Tchamassi sound or do some “bend skin” beats… well check out the other compilations. Here at Africa Seven (and in this case) we are headed for destination funk. The musical topic inevitably leads us to the 70’s and we borrow our super slick source material mainly from the albums Tala made for Fiesta Records from 1973 to 1978.

We open up the bombastic brass, swinging basslines and all out groove of Hot Koki (well after a little intro ditty gem). Then its on to the one of the highlights of “Arabia” album “Black Gold”. This track swoons groove. Layers of picked and choppy guitar and on point drumming. “Sugar Lump” is next which sticks to the formula of the previous track but adds in catchy vocals.

Mining into the cave of delights that is the 1978 “Black Woman” album we then follow up with the driving afro beat grooves and stabby brass of “Gotam” and the boogie flowing grooves of “Black Woman” and the frenetic and driving grooves of “Ma Ka La”. We round things off with the stabby clavi-funk of “Nom Te Ma” and the ultimate groovy funk-riff closer (and ear worm) Tcham Tcham.

So there you some slices of pure funk from a master. Tala’s role of awards and achievements is long and impressive (check his Wikipedia), Knight of Valour of Cameroun, SACEM awards and his opening of a music school in Douala… However.. we feel these musical masterpieces are right up there with his finest achievements.. A true man of music. …~

After years of gigging around the east Nigerian music scene, Foundars 15 finally hit the jackpot when they recruited legendary bass player, Marshall Udo. Charismatic and confident, Udo immediately energised the band, bringing a new funky and psychedelic vibe as well as a bunch of songs he’d workshopped with the Funkees. The tone of the album is set early. Nek Adirika’s searing guitar lick announces ‘We Are On The Move’, a track that is both funky and determined. ‘Co-operation’ is a horn-driven slab of ghetto funk. ‘Cool and Good (For Love)’ is a psychedelic wig-out. ‘Work To Success’ could well be the new-look Foundars 15 manifesto set to music. While Marshall Udo was undoubtedly the catalyst, Co-operation is very much a group effort. Udo, Sony Enang, Nek Adirika and Ike Peters each provide songs and the musicianship of each player is impeccable. Every track is super-tight and sophisticated. This is the sound of a band that means business. It’s also why Co-operation is widely regarded as one of the great Afro-Funk rock albums of all time. - Peter Moore….~

Reissue of Nigerian psychedelic rock/funk album, originally released by Clover Sound in 1977. Mix righteous fuzz guitar, bad-ass keyboards and ecstatic African rhythms and what have you got? ‘Celebration’ by Aktion, a slab of of heavy Afro-funk-pysch-rock from the hardest working band in '70s Nigeria….~

Previously the Action 13, this is the bands second LP for Clover Records whose blend of rock and funk was popular in eastern Nigeria
Ridiculously, ludicrously sick Afro funk psych fuzz heavyweight! It’s like if Hendrix was in the Stooges with Bernie Worrell! Literally every track is a shredder, with some over the top fuzz guitar wailing, wicked synths, rippin’ bass and fatback drums…..~

Mix righteous fuzz guitar, bad-ass keyboards and ecstatic African rhythms and what have you got? Celebration by Aktion - a slab of of heavy Afro-funk-pysch-rock from the hardest working band in 70s Nigeria. Aktion had a residency at the Lido Night Club and Restaurant in Warri but toured constantly. Drummer Ben Alaka and Bass player Renny Pearl Nwosa created a bedrock of hardcore rhythm that allowed the rest of the band to cut loose and follow their own groove. Celebration, their second album, sees Aktion at the height of their powers. Ben Alaka had claimed his crown as the best drummer in the country (Proof: the intro to ‘Centepede’), keyboardist Zeaky George has got his freak on (have a listen to ‘We’re Laughing’) and Jimi Lee’s searing guitar breaks were leaving scorch marks across every track (‘Celebration’, ‘Groove The Funk’, take your pick.) Sadly, Celebration was also their last album. Renny and Lemmy left to form The Stormmers. Jimmi Lee hooked up with Mona Finnih and discovered disco. But Celebration remains a psych rock monster - and a funky, fuzz-filled tribute to Nigeria’s rocking east. - Peter Moore….~
